Yesterday the Sauber team became the 11th and final F1 team to reveal their 2016 car after releasing images of the new C35 online.
The cars launch was delayed until the second pre-season test this week following a change of date for the season-opening race in Australia. Sauber was the only team not to run its new car at last week’s test and instead ran last year’s C34 to evaluate Pirelli’s new tyres.
The C35 features a familiar front end to last year’s model, but the rear of the car is now more tightly packaged.
In a statement to the media yesterday, Technical Director Mark Smith said that the philosophy when designing the C35 was different and has become an evolution. Smith stated the following:-
'For the development of the Sauber C35, we slightly changed the philosophy of how we developed the car aerodynamically. It sounds little, but the impact on the development of the car is significant. When looking at the Sauber C35, it is very much an evolution.'
After finishing eighth in the constructors’ championship last year, Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn said yesterday that the team is hoping to take another step forward in 2016. Kaltenborn said the following:-
'We want to clearly improve. Obviously, there’s a certain position we’d like to achieve. But, to start with, it’s important to become established in the midfield. Only then are we going to focus on individual positions.'
My first thought on the C35 is that there are a few small changes to the car as Smith has stated which you would expect after gathering all the data from last season while also developing the car ready for this season. Overall it is clear that Kaltenborn wants the team to move further forward this season, especially in the midfield.
Kaltenborn understands that it will take a lot of hard work to get there and that they will have to take it slowly and take their chances when they come.
As I have stated in previous articles, I do have a soft spot for the Sauber team and I do hope that they move forward this season and get back to where they should be, even if it will be hard for them given the limited resources that they have.
