Nico Rosberg claims his sixth Pole Position of the season at the German GP

In qualifying for the German GP this afternoon at Hockenheim, Nico Rosberg claimed his sixth Pole Position of the season ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo after Lewis Hamilton locked up a wheel on his last flying lap during Q3.

Shortly after FP3 was finished, it was announced that Romain Grosjean will have to take a five place grid penalty for changing his gearbox after his incident on the track.

It was also announced before Qualifying that Lewis Hamilton was cleared of any wrong-doing regarding the incident in the pitlane between himself and Romain Grosjean. The Mercedes AMG Petronas team was fined £10,000 Euros for releasing Hamilton’s car when it was not safe to do so.

Throughout Qualifying, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were battling with each other for Pole Position, with Hamilton taking the upper hand going into Q3. During Q2, Carlos Sainz Jr is under investigation by the stewards after impeding Felipe Massa on a flying lap and Nico Rosberg on his first run in Q3 backed out of it for suspected electronic issues.

On his last attempt in Q3, Hamilton locked up a wheel after looking like he could steal the pole away from Rosberg and it was Nico Rosberg who claimed Pole Position at his home race at the German GP with a lap time of 1:14.363. Rosberg did it on the anniversary of the last time his father Keke Rosberg took his last ever Pole Position in the sport which is a fitting tribute.

Rosberg was ahead of Lewis Hamilton in second place who was 0.107 seconds behind him and ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in third place who was 0.363 seconds behind Rosberg.

Max Verstappen qualified in fourth place ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in fifth place, Sebastian Vettel in sixth place, Nico Hulkenberg in seventh place, Valtteri Bottas in eighth place,

Sergio Perez in ninth place and Felipe Massa who rounded off the top ten finishers.
Esteban Gutierrez qualified in eleventh place ahead of Jenson Button in twelfth place,

Carlos Sainz Jr in thirteenth place, Fernando Alonso in fourteenth place and Romain Grosjean in fifteenth place.

As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Jolyon Palmer ended the session in sixteenth place ahead of Kevin Magnussen in seventeenth place, Pascal Wehrlein in eighteenth place, Daniil Kvyat in nineteenth place, Rio Haryanto in twentieth place, Felipe Nasr in twenty-first place and Marcus Ericsson in twenty-second place.
