Lorenzo Wins As Marquez Disqualified In Australia
After qualifying on pole, Lorenzo led all the way to reduce the gap to Marquez to just 18 points, with only races in Japan and Valencia left.
Earlier in the weekend, the decision was taken to shorten the race from 27 to 19 laps and that all riders had to change bikes by lap 10 amidst safety concerns about the tyres.
Lorenzo and Pedrosa had pitted on lap 9 and lap 10 respectively but Marquez carried on into lap 11 and was subsequently black flagged with 6 laps left.
Dani Pedrosa secured his sixth second place of the season, ahead of Valentino Rossi who held off Britain's Cal Crutchlow by just over 0.1 of a second. Bradley Smith also rode an impressive race to finish in sixth.
“We were lucky,†said Lorenzo. “Without the mistake from Marc I think he would have been first or second -now the championship has changed so much. Let's see what happens in Motegi.â€
The race stewards had instructed that all riders had until the end of lap 10 to make their pit-stops and it was Pedrosa who was first in on lap 9, followed a lap later by Lorenzo.
However Marquez continued round for another lap. He was then showed the blag flag for “exceeding the maximum number of laps permitted before having to pit.†The result seriously dents his championship ambition but still holds the championship lead heading into Japan.
Fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa was also on the end of some controversy after he speeded at the start of the pit lane meaning he had to drop one position earlier in the race, yet he still managed to finish second.
“I had a good start,†Pedrosa told broadcasters. “I was fighting a lot in the first lap. Then I stopped first, I had the instinct that I had to stop first and it worked out very well. When I changed the bike, the second bike didn't feel the same and Jorge started to pull away.â€
