Jules Bianchi Update

Extent of Jules Bianchi's injuries are released by his family

This afternoon the family of Marussia driver Jules Bianchi has revealed the extent of the head injuries he suffered in a crash during the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday through a press release issued by the Marussia F1 Team.

While Bianchi remains in intensive care at the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi in a critical but stable condition, it has been confirmed that he has suffered a diffuse axonal injury.

Such an injury is usually the consequence of the forces of a rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head and affects the nerves in the brain. Its severity can vary over a wide range.

In a press release issued this afternoon by the Bianchi family in conjunction with the Mie General Medical centre, the following statement has been issued by the Marussia F1 Team in regards to the latest on Bianchi's condition:-

'This is a very difficult time for our family, but the messages of support and affection for Jules from all over the world have been a source of great comfort to us. We would like to express our sincere appreciation.
'Jules remains in intensive care unit of the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi. He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury as in a critical yet stable condition. The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident.

'We are also grateful to the presence of Professor Gerard Salliant, President of the FIA Medical Commission and Professor Alessandro Frati, Neurosurgeon of the University of Rome La Sapienza, who has travelled to Japan at the request of Scuderia Ferrari. They arrived at the hospital today and met with the medical personnel responsible for Jules' treatment, in order to be fully informed of his medical status so that they are able to advise the family. Professors Salliant and Frati acknowledge the excellent care being provided by the Mie General Medical Centre and would like to thank their Japanese colleagues.

'The hospital will continue to monitor and treat Jules and further medical updates will be provided when appropriate.”

Even though this is a difficult time for the Bianchi family, his friends and his colleagues, it is nice to see the F1 Family supporting and thinking of the family who I simply cannot imagine what they are going through right now. It is clear from the statement made by the Bianchi family that Jules has the best possible medical care that he could have and the medical team will be doing everything they can for Jules and also for the family too and will released further information as and when they feel it is right to do so.

A special mention and thank you to all the F1 Family on social media who has supported the Twitter campaign of #DressforJules today. Formula One fans today have posted selfies on their Facebook or Twitter accounts either wearing something red or Formula One related to show their support for Jules Bianchi and his family.
It is really nice to see the best sporting family in the world united in sending their thoughts and prayers to Jules, his family and friends and also his colleagues too and I would urge you if you haven't participated in this event to do so.

Driving for Pleasure will keep you updated with Bianchi as soon as we receive something official from the hospital, Bianchi's family, the Marussia team or any official publication such as Autosport. But our main concern and priority right now is that Jules is okay after his accident and that he is as well as he can be under these difficult circumstances.

For all at Driving for Pleasure, our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, friends and his colleagues at this sad and difficult time. Keep on fighting Jules, we are all supporting you and behind you all the way. #ForzaJules #DressforJules
