Jean-Eric Vergne takes Pole Position for the Berlin ePrix as Di Grassi struggles for pace

In qualifying for the Berlin ePrix yesterday, DS Virgin Racing driver Jean-Eric Vergne claimed pole position for the Berlin ePrix ahead of Sebastien Buemi and Daniel Abt; as Formula E championship leader Lucas di Grassi will start down in eighth place.

Vergne’s superpole effort of 57.811s bested Renault e.dams driver Sebastien Buemi by just 0.016 seconds. Buemi was the last to run but ended the session in second place ahead of Daniel Abt in third place with the German driver getting the better of Abt Audi Sport team-mate Lucas di Grassi in qualifying for the first time since last year’s race in Long Beach.

Sam Bird qualified in fourth place ahead of Nelson Piquet Jr in fifth place, Nicolas Prost in sixth place, Oliver Turvey in seventh, Lucas di Grassi in eighth place, Loic Duval in ninth place and Simona de Silvestro in tenth place.

Meanwhile the Mahindra duo of Bruno Senna and Nick Heidfeld completed the superpole runners but neither could replicate their impressive earlier efforts, Senna struggling with an upshift issue and Heidfeld clipping the wall. Both drivers, along with Stephane Sarrazin and Jerome d’Ambrosio, were then relegated to the back for incorrect tyre pressures.

But Lucas Di Grassi was the biggest casualty of the group phase of qualifying, though apart from a slight mistake he was not unhappy with his lap.
