Hamilton quickest in FP3 at Austin

Yesterday afternoon we saw Lewis Hamilton setting the pace in FP1 in Austin ahead of his team mate and championship rival Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa who was third fastest.

During FP3, we saw a few drivers spinning off during the session. With drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez locking up their rear tyres at Turn 12, it would seem that managing brakes and tyres will be crucial during the weekend. We also saw Felipe Massa locking up his tyres too but he was able to continue during the session.

It wasn't until the second half of the session that the Mercedes drivers set their lap times and during FP3, Nico Rosberg suffered an unsettled rear end and problems with his brakes and if that wasn't enough, he made a mistake on his last lap and could have beaten his team mate.

But it was Hamilton who was fastest in FP3 ahead of Rosberg with a lap time of 1.37.107. It was suggested that Hamilton during the session baulked Ricciardo in the Esses section of the track, but nothing has been said to the stewards on this matter. Rosberg finished the session in second place ahead of Massa who was 1.107 seconds behind the two Mercedes drivers.

Valtteri Bottas finished the session in fourth place ahead of Fernando Alonso in fifth place, Daniel Ricciardo in sixth place and Nico Hulkenberg in seventh place. Adrian Sutil was the surprise of the session in eighth place ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in ninth place and Jenson Button who rounded off the top 10 finishers.

Kevin Magnussen ended the session in eleventh place ahead of the Lotus drivers of Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean who finished in twelfth and thirteenth places. Sergio Perez finished the session in fourteenth place ahead of Daniil Kvyat in fifteenth place.
As we head into the latter stages of the grid, Esteban Guiterrez finished the session in sixteenth place ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne in seventeenth place and Sebastian Vettel in eighteenth place.
