Hamilton gains Pole Position at the last second for the Singapore GP

In an action-packed qualifying this afternoon, we saw Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton setting the pace again by claiming Pole Position at the last second away from his team mate Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo.

Just less than a tenth of a second separated the two Mercedes drivers as they crossed the line at the close of a riveting top-ten shootout. But this could be a potentially critical advantage for Hamilton around the notoriously tight Marina Bay Circuit where overtaking is extremely difficult.

When Rosberg was informed of the news that his team mate Hamilton snatched Pole Position from him Rosberg shouted “Damn it!” over his car-to-pit radio. But in the Press Conference, Rosberg stated that “Seven-thousandths…it’s nothing! But Lewis did a good job so fair play.”

Hamilton was fastest and set a lap time of 1.45.697 ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg in second place 0.007 seconds behind and Daniel Ricciardo in third place 0.173 seconds behind him. Sebastian Vettel finished the session in fourth place ahead of Fernando Alonso in fifth and Felipe Massa in sixth place.

Kimi Raikkonen finished the session in seventh place. However, Raikkonen was told in the final moments of Q3 that he had to stop the car due to suspected electrical problems. But he did finish ahead of Valtteri Bottas in eighth place, Kevin Magnussen in ninth place and Daniil Kvyat finishing the top ten runners.

Jenson Button finished the session in eleventh after a difficult qualifying session ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne in twelfth place, Nico Hulkenberg in thirteenth place and Esteban Guiterrez in fourteenth place. Sergio Perez qualified in fifteenth place ahead of Romain Grosjean in sixteenth place, Adrian Sutil in seventeenth place and Pastor Maldonado in eighteenth place.

As we head to the latter stages of the grid, Jules Bianchi qualified in nineteenth place ahead of Kamui Kobayashi in twentieth place ahead of Max Chilton in twenty-first and Marcus Ericsson in twenty-second, despite Ericsson getting his car out for Qualifying after suffering electrical issues at the end of FP3.
