The penalties handed out to drivers after the Feature Race altered how the Sprint Race grid would line up. Raffaele Marciello's penalty demoted him from reverse grid pole position which was taken by Nathanaël Berthon for the second year in succession here in Hungary.
At the race start, Stoffel Vandoorne stormed into the race lead at the expense of Berthon who dropped another place to third behind Felipe Nasr. Jolyon Palmer managed to get past the French driver after a couple of laps but the biggest winner on the first lap was Conor Daly who managed to get to P7 having started in 13th place. Yesterday's third place finisher Takuya Izawa made contact on the first lap which damaged his front wing. The Japanese driver was shown the black and orange flag forcing him into the pits to make repairs.
Stefano Coletti and Johnny Cecotto got involved in a tussle at the chicane with the Trident driver coming off the worst of the pair. A second retirement in two days for Cecotto doing nothing for his title chances. Coletti carried on but tyre troubles later in the race forced him to retire too. This wasn't before he took a drive through penalty for causing a collision with André Negrão at the first corner.
Palmer and Nasr were involved in a similar controversial move at the first corner. The Briton came from a long way back and appeared to give Nasr very little, perhaps even no room which resulted in the Brazilian relinquishing second place having gone off the track. The stewards investigated the move but no further action was warranted.
Negrão suffered another collision when Simon Trummer tried to force his way through at turn two which damaged the Brazilian's suspension and forced him to stop the car and retire. Kimiya Sato suffered yet another retirement today; the Japanese driver pulling his Campos Racing car off the track with less than ten laps to go.
28 laps of racing came to an end and it was Stoffel Vandoorne taking top honours. The Belgian drove so smoothly all race long and had enough life left in his tyres to set the fastest lap on the last lap to collect the two extra points. Felipe Nasr and Jolyon Palmer rounded out the podium places.
