Ferrari cancel wet weather test at Fiorano due to Vettel's crash

The Ferrari team has cancelled the second day of its wet-weather Pirelli tyre test at Fiorano due to Sebastian Vettel's on Thursday.

Yesterday Vettel who was driving a modified SF15-T spun out mid-way through the first of two planned days of testing on an artificially-soaked track aimed at sampling Pirelli’s wider 2017 rubber.

There was a number of videos posted online showed Vettel hitting the barriers head on after his car snapped away at a left-hand kink in the circuit.

After evaluating the damage overnight, Ferrari has decided there were not enough spare parts to continue running. That denies new reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi — who made his first test appearance at Fiorano last week — a chance for further testing miles as he had been slated to take over on Friday.

Pirelli had been keen for Ferrari to provide feedback for its wet-weather tyre ahead of the 2017 season, which sees big regulation changes including chunkier tyres. Rule tweaks also mean there will be standing starts immediately after a safety car returns to the pits, meaning tyre warm-up is an area of concern going into the new campaign.

Vettel escaped serious injury in the crash, with Motorsport.com reporting his only issue was some minor bruising on the elbow when he hit the side of the cockpit.
