It was announced yesterday that GP2 runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi will join Ferrari as its third driver for the 2017 Formula One season.
The Italian took five wins and bagged a total of eight podiums in 2016, but despite recording the most victories of any driver across the season, he ultimately missed out on the GP2 Series title to Prema teammate and Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly by just eight points.
While Giovinazzi’s full-time racing plans for 2017 are yet to be announced, Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne revealed yesterday that the 23-year-old will begin working with the Maranello based-outfit next year.
“I can confirm that in 2017 he [Giovinazzi] will be our third driver,” Marchionne said. “We took him because he is a great driver, but I am very pleased also that he is an Italian.”
Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said Giovinazzi will begin a simulator programme in January, and he is expected to drive the 2017 car during in-season testing.
Giovinazzi has already had his first taste of Ferrari’s F1 simulator, having been handed an outing following his GP2 win in Monza in September.
