It was announced this afternoon by the FIA the entry list for the 2017 Formula One World Championship. McLaren-Honda rookie Stoffel Vandoorne and Williams rookie Lance Stroll have chosen the numbers 2 and 18 for their Formula One careers, the FIA’s provisional 2017 entry list has confirmed.
The entry list has already been amended to reflect Nico Rosberg’s shock retirement as world champion, meaning Mercedes and Sauber still have a seat to fill, while Manor’s entire line-up is yet to be confirmed. Teams can wait until March to choose their drivers, though pre-season testing commences at the end of February.
Also of note is the TBC next to Toro Rosso’s engine for the season. The team has already confirmed Renault power, like parent team Red Bull, but the TBC status suggests Toro Rosso will also run the power units under the TAG Heuer branding in 2017. Red Bull reached the agreement with the Swiss company after falling out with Renault during the 2015 season.
Under F1’s new rules, drivers now choose a number to accompany them for their entire career in F1, with McLaren rookie Vandoorne choosing #2. Vandoorne used the number 47 for his debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix last year, where he stepped in for the injured Fernando Alonso, but that was not a permanent choice. Stroll, set to debut at Williams alongside Valtteri Bottas, has chosen #18.
