*1964 F1 Champion John Surtees passes away aged 83

This afternoon saw the motorsport world learn of the sad news of the 1964 Formula One World Champion John Surtees passing away at 83 years old; therefore still being the only driver to have won titles on both two and four wheels.

Surtees began his prestigious career in motorcycle racing, winning the 500cc world championship in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 before switching to Formula One and claiming a historic title four years later.

The sad news was confirmed by his family in a statement issued to Henry Surtees Foundation Facebook page on Friday afternoon as follows:-

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our husband and father, John Surtees CBE,” a family statement read..

“John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was also one of the true greats of motorsport and continued to work tirelessly up until recently with The Henry Surtees Foundation and Buckmore Park Kart Circuit.

“We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life. He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end.

“We would like to thank all the staff at St George's Hospital and The East Surrey Hospital for their professionalism and support during this difficult time for us. Thank you also to all of those who have sent their kind messages in recent weeks.

“Funeral details will be announced in due course.”

Everyone at Driving for Pleasure sends their thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Surtees Family and his friends at this difficult time. John will be forever loved and missed by the motorsport community and his legacy will continue to live on in the sport in the best way possible; the story of an determined, passionate and legend of a driver.
